New Language Policy Adopted
CAS candidates will have the opportunity to respond to essay questions in languages other than English beginning with the Spring 1999 examinations. To qualify, the candidate must provide prior notice by indicating this option on the registration form and specifying which language will be used. The following policy was approved by the Board of Directors and appears in the CAS 1999 Syllabus of Examinations:
The Effectiveness of Appeals
by Arlene F. Woodruff, FCAS
CAS Examination Committee"When a valid appeal is received, it is reviewed by the part chair and a recommendation is made to the Examination Committee chair. The Examination Committee chair will respond based on the recommendation by the part chair." -CAS 1999 Syllabus of Examinations
Students have often questioned the effectiveness of the appeal process. In most cases, the appeals have no impact on the number of students who pass an exam. However, in the past year there have been two instances in which an appeal changed the effective passing percentage.
