Task Force Reviews CAS Exam Process
The CAS Board established the Task Force on Review of Education and Examination Process and Procedures to take an independent, objective look at the CAS education and examination process. In December 1998, the task force issued a request for feedback from both candidates and members. The request was posted on the CAS Web Site and published in the Spring 1999 Notice of Examinations and the February issue of the Actuarial Review.
Members of the task force are reviewing topics such as "syllabus creep" (has the amount of material increased on the Syllabus of Examinations over the last twenty years?), CAS Study Notes, and issues about the pass mark, appeals, and publication of the examinations with sample solutions.
In forming the task force at the CAS Annual Meeting in Toronto, Ontario, last November, 1998 CAS President Mavis Walters stated that the task force was not created because of a perceived problem with the current admissions process. On the contrary, she noted that the Board, the Executive Council, and others involved in the education and examination process have been very complimentary of the efforts and success of the admissions committees. Walters reasoned that since some students and members will always be critical of the admissions process, it is valuable to have an independent committee take a step back, review the process, and report its findings.
