Abstract
Mr. Michelbacher's paper embodies a sincere and eloquent protest against the misinterpretation of statistics in the casualty business. His plea is bound to evoke the sympathy of all of us who, like him, have "attempted to prevent the improper use of statistics." After his initial comment upon the statistical ineptitude of producers, assured, insurance counselors, underwriters, claim men, public officials, legislators, etc. he buckles down to the onerous duty of "unscrewing the inscrutable" for their benefit; and, once he gets into his stride, he does a fine job of directing the searchlight of "pitiless publicity," as it were, upon each, in turn, of several of the favorite stumbling blocks of amateur statisticians.
