Loss Reserving Data Pulled from NAIC Schedule P
Updated in 2026 to include an additional 10 accident years, this data set includes major personal and commercial lines of business from U.S. property and casualty insurers. The claims data comes from Schedule P – Analysis of Losses and Loss Expenses in the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) database.
Loss Simulation Model and Documentation
CAS Loss Simulator 2.0 is an open-source R package (cascsim.zip), helping actuaries perform transaction data fitting and claim-level loss reserving. It comes with an Excel Front End to assist users with an easy-to-use interface. Note that the Loss Simulator will be replaced by the ActSim Tool in the coming months.
ActSim (Coming Soon!)
ActSim is a Python-based actuarial modeling toolkit (developed by Juntao Simon Zhang and validated by the CAS Risk Working Group) that combines distribution fitting, stochastic simulation, and synthetic claims generation into a unified workflow. Similar to CAS Loss Simulator 2.0, ActSim generates realistic claim-level data (including development over time) and provides distribution fitting to support assumption setting, making it practical for reserving analysis, scenario testing, and risk modeling. It modernizes and extends this workflow with a modular, AI-ready design and distributions aligned with actuarial conventions. Built around three core modules: DistributionFitter, StochasticSimulator, and ClaimSimulator, ActSim supports pricing, reserving, and catastrophe modeling with features such as compound frequency-severity simulation, copula-based dependency modeling, LDF-driven claim development, and key risk metrics (VaR, TVaR, OEP, AEP).
GitHub
The CAS maintains an active organizational account on GitHub. What's GitHub? It's a cloud-based version control system that allows actuaries and others to share and enhance code. Note that code encompasses more than just software. By writing in a format like RMarkdown, we can also share research papers and other human-readable items.
If you'd like to learn more about git and GitHub, the CAS has a series of microlearning videos that provide an overview.
Data for CAS Research Projects
Access to the following resources can be requested by emailing CAS Research & Publications Director Elizabeth Smith. They are intended for researchers working on CAS-sponsored projects.
S&P Data License: Provides crucial financial data, market trends, and performance benchmarks helpful for risk modeling, solvency assessment, competitive analysis, and strategic planning.
Regrid: Offerscomprehensive data on U.S. residential properties sourced from tax assessor data and includes parcel boundaries and other spatial details.
VerdictSearch: Spanning January 1, 2010, through December 31, 2024, this database of jury verdicts and settlements across the U.S. includes items such as verdict/settlement dates, jurisdictions (state and county), insurers involved, and injury type.
Pricing Data Set: With nearly 4 million earned exposures, this data set offers 1 order of magnitude more exposures than freMTPL. It includes dozens of features (blinded). Confidential use required.
