April/May Exam Results Timeline

As CAS admissions leadership and staff work diligently with psychometricians to release the April/May results by the end of July, we understand that candidates have questions as to why results are delayed.

First, we would like to acknowledge that candidates make significant sacrifices to prepare for CAS exams, and they make personal and professional investments throughout the study process. We understand that the extended timeline for releasing results may be frustrating and that study strategies for the October/November exam sitting may need to be adjusted. We would like to address why scoring and score reporting is taking longer than usual following the technology disruption on May 1.

Retake examinations were scheduled 3-4 weeks after the May 1 disruption, causing an initial shift in the timing of when scoring, analysis, pass marks, and score reports could be finalized. Because of the disruption, an additional series of analyses are being conducted to ensure that candidates responses are scored fairly.

A frequently asked question about the extended timeline for releasing results has been, “Why can’t the CAS just recruit more graders to speed up the grading and release of results?” The extended timeline has not been driven by a lack of graders; the two primary reasons for the delay are: 1) The extended window for retake examinations, and 2) The need to perform extensive additional analyses to ensure fairness in scoring. The CAS greatly appreciates the efforts of our exam graders for taking on the additional burden of scoring the retake examinations in a timely manner.

The specific release date of exam results will be announced prior to results being available, with MAS-I and MAS-II results expected to be released shortly before Exams 5-9 results.

The May 1 disruption and subsequent retakes introduced an added layer of complexity to the April/May sitting’s grading process that was unique to this sitting. We appreciate the understanding of the candidate and extended stakeholder community as we systematically work through these challenges to provide results that are valid, reliable, and fair.

To help address concerns around study strategies and timing the upcoming October/November sitting window will be extended by one week. Details on the extended dates will be announced prior to registration opening. We understand that this does not fully address the shortened timeline before the exam window opens, however, this one-week extension seeks a balance between providing candidates additional time to study and the ability of CAS stakeholders to provide on-time results for the next sitting to prevent a “domino” effect of delay of future sittings. Registration for the October/November exams will open after exam results have been released.

Sincerely,
CAS Office
