Submission Guidelines
Interested contributors are invited to submit their intent to participate by January 12, 2024. Submissions should be sent by February 1, 2024, to CAS Director of Publications and Research Elizabeth Smith (esmith@casact.org). Essays should be approximately 2,000 to 4,000 words.
Essay Format
Essays are an excellent way to contribute to professional literature by emphasizing your original opinion and observations on a topic. You do not need to be an AI “expert” to contribute an essay! Essays typically differ from traditional technical research in the following ways:
- The primary purpose of an essay is to express the author's thoughts, opinions, or arguments on a specific topic. Essays often have a more conversational and flexible tone; they might aim to persuade, inform, or entertain the reader.
- Essays are shorter and more concise than traditional research, allowing a focused exploration of a topic without the need for an exhaustive review of existing literature or extensive data collection. Research for an essay is typically more straightforward and may involve finding relevant sources to support the author's argument or provide context.
- Essays typically have a more flexible structure. They may include an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, but the organization can vary based on the author's preference and the requirements of the assignment.
Prize Fund, Evaluation and Publication
A prize fund of $10,000 will be awarded to the selected essays based on the following evaluation criteria:
- Relevance and Originality: The essay demonstrates a clear understanding of the chosen topic and offers original insights.
- Clarity of Thought and Expression: The essay is well-structured, articulate, and communicates ideas effectively.
- Depth of Analysis: The depth of analysis and exploration of the chosen topic, backed by evidence and examples, will be considered.
- Practical Implications: The essay highlights practical implications and applications of the discussed concepts in the actuarial profession.
A group of reviewers will make the final determination of which essays are published, which authors are invited to present their essays at the 2024 CAS Spring Meeting, and whether any essays will be recognized with an award from the prize fund.
Essays will be published on the CAS E-Forum microsite in 2024.
We look forward to thought-provoking contributions that contribute to the collective understanding of the challenges and opportunities at the intersection of actuarial science and artificial intelligence.
