CAS Releases New Spotlight on Diversity Infographic: LGBTQ+ Community in the CAS
The CAS is committed to maintaining transparency and accountability around our diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) efforts, as part of the CAS Strategic Approach to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion adopted by the Board of Directors in February 2022. Today, the CAS has released a new addition to its 2023 Spotlight on Diversity Infographics, the LGBTQ+ Community in the CAS infographic.
This infographic summarizes member and candidate data collected from the 2023 Quinquennial (5-year) and Candidate (2-year) surveys. Members and candidates were asked “Do you identify as a member of the LGBTQ+ Community?” with response options of “Yes,” “No,” and “I prefer not to answer.” Of the 2939 CAS Members that responded to the Quinquennial Survey, 92.7% provided either a Yes or No response to this question. Of the 989 CAS Exam candidates who responded to the Candidate Survey, 93.9% provided either a Yes or No response to this question.
- 5% of survey respondents (CAS members and Candidates) across all age ranges, stated that they identified as LGBTQ+. This compares to 9% of adults worldwide, based on an Ipsos LGBT+ Pride Study 2023 Global Survey.
- LGBTQ+ representation among members and candidates increases with age, from 3% of those ages 41 to 60, to 9% of those up to 30 years old.
This infographic also shows how the experiences and perspectives of LGBTQ+ members and candidates may differ from non-LGBTQ+ members and candidates.
- LGBTQ+ respondents agreed to this statement at a higher rate than all other respondents (82% vs 64%, respectively): “The CAS should play a role in helping to build a more diverse actuarial profession.“
- LGBTQ+ respondents disagreed with this statement at a higher rate than all other respondents (10% vs 5%, respectively): “Diversity of thought or opinion is welcomed, valued, and respected within the P&C actuarial profession.”
The CAS collaborated with the Sexuality and Gender Alliance of Actuaries (SAGAA) on the development of this infographic. SAGAA reflects on the four years since their founding in this Roundtable Blog.
CAS members and our broader community are encouraged to get involved with actuarial Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives, either through volunteering with groups like SAGAA, or by joining the Diversity Impact Group (DIG) micro-volunteering community.
