CAS Sponsors 30th Annual ANEA-ASNA Convention in Niagara Falls
The Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) joined over 650 actuarial science students and 41 sponsors at the ANÉA-ASNA 2020 Convention January 14-16, 2020 in Niagara Falls, Ontario, hosted by Canada's Actuarial Students' National Association. As a Diamond Conference Sponsor, the CAS had an active presence at the three-day event. The CAS interacted with students at the career fair, participated on a professional panel, presented an educational session, hosted the Saturday luncheon, and sat on a case competition judging panel.
The convention kicked off with the career fair. The CAS booth was staffed with CAS member volunteers, who shared their advice and insights as practicing actuaries with students. CAS volunteers included Lisha Qin, ACAS, and Michelle Rutman, FCAS, who joined CAS Staff Mike Boa, Chief Communications Officer and Tamar Gertner, CAS University Engagement Manager.
Participating on the professional panel Friday evening was Adil Virani, FCAS, who answered students' questions and talked about being a property and casualty actuary. Adil also presented the CAS session on Saturday entitled, "Pricing Using Machine Learning" which shared tips on communicating technical information to non-technical stakeholders.
The CAS Luncheon featured keynote speaker, Steve Armstrong, FCAS, president of the CAS. Steve's presentation walked through eight qualities of a successful actuary, and he shared his personal experiences throughout the talk. Before leaving the stage he took the opportunity to do a selfie with the over 650 attendees!
In addition, Matthew Buchalter, FCAS, helped judge the ANÉA-ASNA Case Competition, joining volunteer judges from the SOA and CIA, in selecting the winning team for the convention's 7th annual competition.
