CAS Student Central Summer Program Volunteer Opportunities

The CAS is seeking volunteer mentors to participate in the 2023 CAS Student Central Summer Program, an eight-week interactive professional and educational experience for university students spanning June 12 thru August 4! This free online program, designed by practicing actuaries, will support students’ career growth by providing technical and soft skill development through a series of weekly modules. Complete program details are outlined in the following announcement.

Mentors are an integral component of the program, offering students the chance to connect with and learn from CAS members who provide guidance and help them navigate the program. Going into the fourth year of the program, students have consistently ranked meeting with mentors during weekly cohort meetings as one of the most valuable aspects of the program.

Please review the detailed mentor description below and sign up through the mentor volunteer form.

We will also be recruiting CAS members and candidates for micro-volunteering opportunities including case competition judges and speakers. To indicate an interest in being contacted for micro-volunteering opportunities, please share your contact information through this micro-volunteer form.

Description of Mentor Role:

Mentors will be paired together to ensure coverage, and to give the option to split up topics and weeks assigned. The time commitment is one hour per week. Mentor/Student Cohort meetings to occur Thursdays or Fridays.

  • Facilitate weekly group discussions among student cohort of up to 8 participants as they advance through weekly modules covering topics including technical and soft skills, pricing, reserving, data visualization, and predictive modeling.
  • Provide guidance to students as they work through a CAS Case Competition the final two weeks of the program.
  • A mentor orientation will be offered prior to the program, and outlines will be provided to mentors to help facilitate each weekly discussion, which will occur after the students have watched a presentation on the specified topic and worked through an assignment.

If you have any questions about the volunteer roles or the program in general, please email CAS University Engagement Manager, Margaret Gaddy at MGaddy@casact.org.
