The Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) and The Institutes CPCU Society invite you to be a part of the 2019 Underwriting Collaboration Seminar (UCS) scheduled for March 25, 2019, in Boston, MA. This year, UCS will be a one-day event with approximately 100 attendees, held in conjunction with the Ratemaking, Product, and Modeling (RPM) Seminar taking place March 25-27, 2019. This will enable UCS attendees to network with RPM attendees at lunch and at the reception. Those that stay for the RPM Seminar will be able to attend all the main programming, set to start on Tuesday, March 26.

The Committee strives to construct a rich program addressing issues, applications and insight with heavy focus on actuarial and underwriting issues, fostering cross-pollination and collaboration of risk management professionals without regard to industry sector or geographic location.

Topics of interest for the seminar will be subject to change:

  • Insurtech
  • Catastrophe Update
  • Automation/Modernization
  • Microinsurance
  • ... and more!

The seminar includes:

  • 2 General Sessions
  • 8 Concurrent Sessions

CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION CREDIT

The CAS Continuing Education Policy applies to all ACAS and FCAS members who provide actuarial services. Actuarial services are defined in the CAS Code of Professional Conduct as “professional services provided to a Principal by an individual acting in the capacity of an actuary. Such services include the rendering of advice, recommendations, findings, or opinions based upon actuarial considerations.”

Members who are or could be subject to the continuing education requirements of a national actuarial organization can meet the requirements of the CAS Continuing Education Policy by satisfying the continuing education requirements established by a national actuarial organization recognized by the Policy.

This seminar may qualify for up to 7.8* CE credits for CAS members. The Underwriting Collaboration Seminar is eligible for 6.75 Continuing Education credits in the CE for CPCU program. Credits will automatically be reported to CE for CPCU within 60 day of completion.

Participants should claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. CAS members earn 1 CE credit per 50 minutes of educational session time not to include breaks or lunch.

*The amount of CE credit that can be earned for participating in this activity must be assessed by the individual attendee. It also may be different for individuals who are subject to the requirements of organizations other than the American Academy of Actuaries.

PAPERLESS MEETING

Green conferences incorporate environmental considerations to minimize negative impacts on the environment. The CAS has taken a step in that direction by making the Underwriting Collaboration Seminar “paperless,” which means:

  • Paper copies of session handouts will not be provided in the meeting rooms.
  • Paper copies of the list of attendees will not be distributed, though a few copies will be available for review at the registration desk.
  • Evaluations will be administered electronically
  • Session slides will be posted on the CAS Web Site at least two weeks in advance of the conference so that attendees can download, print, and bring handouts as desired. Please note that not every presenter will choose to provide a presentation for his or her session.

Once at the Underwriting Collaboration Seminar, attendees are encouraged to view the list of attendees online, complete the online evaluation forms, and download presentations for the sessions they attend.

The CAS appreciates your participation in this effort to reduce the conference’s carbon footprint and impact on the environment.

General sessions

GENERAL SESSION 1: GEOSPATIAL INTELLIGENCE CENTER: HOW’S IT’S TRANSFORMING THE INSURANCE INDUSTRY

When a natural disaster strikes, the lives of thousands of citizens are affected. Insurance companies understand that there’s nothing more important than helping those in need to recover from losses. With families relying on their insurers to respond instantaneously, this presents the challenge of identifying and prioritizing response efforts based on areas impacted the most.

Thus the National Insurance Crime Bureau created the Geospatial Intelligence Center in partnership with Vexcel Imaging, a leading provider of geospatial data, and has since revolutionized how insurers handle claims. Founded in 2017, the GIC is an industry consortium modernizing how insurers approach claims management, underwriting, and disaster response through geospatial data and technology.

Our approach is rapid and effective. When a natural disaster occurs, the GIC immediately mobilizes to impacted areas with an aircraft fleet equipped with state-of-the-art digital aerial sensor systems.

Within 24-hours of aircrafts landing, ultra-high resolution 360° imagery is available to GIC members along with tools to provide rapid insight into damaged properties and claims. The program has the ability to save lives with its innovative approach to disaster response in addition to significantly reducing insurance fraud. We’ve successfully deployed to several natural disasters here in the United States and will to continue to provide location-based insights to ensure the fastest and most complete catastrophe response.

Moderator:
Robert Galbraith, Insurance Nerds
Speakers:
James Schweitzer, Sr. VP/COO, National Insurance Crime Bureau
Ryan Bank, Consultant, National Insurance Crime Bureau

GENERAL SESSION 2: EVOLUTION OF INSURTECH

InsurTech companies are flooding the landscape of the insurance industry. These innovators seek to challenge traditional business models for insurance, leveraging advancements in technology and creative thinking to deliver new products and differentiated levels of service to customers. We will hear from industry experts who are shaking up the insurance landscape, exploring new business models for the sharing economy and peer to peer insurance, and consider the implications of these innovations on the actuarial community.

Moderator:
Carl Ashenbrenner, Milliman Inc.
Speakers:
John Peters, Chief Underwriting Officer, Lemonade Inc.
Martha Notaras, Partner, XL Innovate
