CASUALTY ACTUARIAL SOCIETY'S ENVISIONED FUTURE (FROM THE CAS STRATEGIC PLAN)

The CAS will be recognized globally as the premier organization in advancing the practice and application of casualty actuarial science and educating professionals in general insurance, including property-casualty and similar risk exposure.

CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS

The CAS Continuing Education Policy applies to all ACAS and FCAS members who provide actuarial services. Actuarial services are defined in the CAS Code of Professional Conduct as “professional services provided to a Principal by an individual acting in the capacity of an actuary. Such services include the rendering of advice, recommendations, findings or opinions based upon actuarial considerations.” Members who are or could be subject to the continuing education requirements of a national actuarial organization can meet the requirements of the CAS Continuing Education Policy by satisfying the continuing education requirements established by a national actuarial organization recognized by the Policy.

This activity may qualify for up to 18.9 CE credits (at least 8.1 per day Tuesday - Thursday, if you also add Monday’s complimentary sessions) for the Annual Meeting for CAS members. Participants should claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. CAS members earn 1 CE credit per 50 minutes of educational session time, not to include breaks or lunch.

Note: The amount of CE credit that can be earned for participating in this activity must be assessed by the individual attendee. It also may be different for individuals who are subject to the requirements of organizations other than the American Academy of Actuaries.

Virtual Annual Meeting attendees will get a discount of $50 for the other days’ recordings they did not register to attend live.

For those that do not register for the meeting, recordings will be $90/day and $150 for the full event.

CAS STUDENT AMBASSADOR CONFERENCE

Monday, November 9
11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

The CAS Student Central Ambassador program, now in its fifth year, was launched to spur the continued growth of CAS Student Central, the CAS’s free membership program for university students pursuing a career as an actuary. Actuarial student leaders serve as CAS Ambassadors – the youngest of CAS’s volunteer workforce – with the goals of increasing the awareness of CAS Student Central among their classmates and strengthening CAS ties to the university. Ambassadors host on-campus events featuring CAS member speakers, provide information to fellow students, and spread the word about the CAS and actuarial profession as a career choice.

The CAS has invited its student ambassadors from 30 universities to attend a 2-day CAS Student Ambassador Conference November 9-10. The conference will consist of workshops, professional development sessions, and networking among students and CAS members. The students will have a chance to hold discussions about the role of CAS Student Central Ambassadors, covering best practices, challenges, examples of successful events, and plans for the upcoming semester. These discussions will assist in further developing the CAS Student Central Ambassador Program.

2020 CAS ANNUAL MEETING FAQ FOR NEW MEMBER RECOGNITION

How are new members recognized at the virtual meeting?

With the 2020 Annual Meeting moving to a virtual format, we will be celebrating all new members (new ACAS, FCAS, and CERA) in a series of special videos during the Celebration of New Members on Monday, November 9. This celebration will occur via livestream and be available for viewing at no cost as a separate event from the rest of the Annual Meeting. Registration details for Monday, November 9, will be sent via email in the next few weeks. We encourage all new members to register so they may view this virtual celebration of their accomplishment.

Do I have to attend the full CAS Annual Meeting to watch the Celebration of New Members ceremony?

No - the virtual Celebration of New Members is part of an independent event on Monday, November 9. This standalone event will require a separate (complimentary) registration and details are forthcoming. Registration for the CAS Annual Meeting (November 10-12) is purchased separately and is not a prerequisite for participating in the free event on Monday, November 9.

May others (non-CAS members/family/friends) view the Celebration of New Members?

Yes – registration to view the Celebration of New Members is available to any interested person, at no cost. We encourage you to share the registration link (once available) with your family and friends to join in the celebration of your accomplishments!

If I am recognized virtually, will that prevent me from being recognized at a future in-person meeting?

New members that are recognized virtually at the 2020 Annual Meeting will have two opportunities to be recognized when in-person meetings resume, by attending either the next in-person Spring or Annual Meeting. There is no immediate action necessary regarding in-person recognition. Once in-person events are planned, you will be notified of your additional recognition options.

Will there be a recording of the Celebration of New Members?

Yes! A recording will be made available for repeat viewing after the meeting.

What may we expect at the virtual Celebration of New Members?

In addition to welcome remarks from the CAS CEO, Victor Carter-Bey, and CAS President, Steve Armstrong, there will be an address to new members and a recognition video for the ACAS, CERA and FCAS (which will include photos submitted by new members).

Are there any further steps I need to take at this time?

We would love for everyone to be featured in the video! Please send us a photo of yourself celebrating earning your credential. You may simulate the walk on stage, pose with your diploma, celebrate with balloons, or create a special background.

How you celebrate this professional milestone is up to you!

The photo should be shot in landscape (horizontally) not portrait (vertically), with the file saved like the following example: Annual20_Designation_LastName_FirstName_Designation (Annual20_ACAS_Wolff_Shelby)

Please upload your photo via this link by September 25. Any image submissions after that date are not guaranteed to be included in the ceremony.

Please check back to this page for any updated FAQ’s. If you have any further questions, please email CAS Membership and Volunteer Manager, Shelby Wolff, swolff@casact.org.

GIRO SESSION AT ANNUAL

A TALE NOT TOLD BY AN IDIOT: EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION THROUGH STORYTELLING

Stories have been around as long as humanity, yet many actuaries shy away from the narrative form. Why? Are we convinced that there's nothing dramatic about a reserve study? Can an actuary not play the hero?

Join us on our epic quest from the 6th day to the present day, as we explore how monsters, magic and mystery can transform your reports from turgid rags to C-suite.

Speakers:
Brian Fannin, CAS Research Actuary
Alex Marcuson, Managing Director, Marcuson Consulting Ltd

General sessions

COVID-19’S IMPACT ON THE P&C (RE)INSURANCE INDUSTRY

Nobody had COVID-19 in their 2020 business plan, but beginning in Q1 it became a significant factor in most companies’ results and projections.
In addition to being a significant industry loss event, COVID-19 has also been a unique challenge for actuaries, given the lack of historical precedent, the ongoing nature of the event, its broad and varied impact across different lines of business, the lack of relevant data available, and the high degree of uncertainty.

Brian Brown will share a consulting actuary’s perspective on the impact of COVID-19 on the industry as a whole, including the latest available insight on the magnitude and nature of the impact by line of business.

Justin Brenden will discuss his experience in estimating COVID-19 losses at a reinsurance company across most of the affected lines of business, including not only the actuarial analysis, but also the accounting implications and the communication of those results.

Panelists
Brian Brown, Global Casualty Practice Director, Milliman
Justin Brenden, Chief Reserving Actuary, Third Point Re
Moderator
Benoit Carrier, Managing Director, Aon

THE ACTUARY AND SOCIAL JUSTICE

Every actuary knows their responsibility towards avoiding unfairly discriminatory variables in ratemaking. But where does the concept of “disparate impact” fit in? And what does it mean towards the responsibility an actuary has to investigate, highlight and fight systematic biases in insurance? At its best, insurance serves as a tool for incentivizing good behavior. How can our profession apply that to uncovering issues of bias in the workplace and society at large? This session will explore ways in which actuaries can use data driven approaches to uncover and action inequality.

Following this session, attendees will:

  • Confirm their understanding of the unfair discrimination standard and how it applies to variables we use e.g. credit, gender etc.
  • Reconfirm their knowledge on historical and current frameworks that perpetuate bias
  • Understand how other professions view their professional responsibilities for social justice
  • Discover innovate ways to fight bias in the profession

Speakers:
Mary Frances Miller, Partner and Consulting Actuary, Select Actuarial Services
Jessica Leong, Lead Data Scientist, Zurich N.A., ; President-Elect, CAS
Tomantha Kyle, Senior Manager, Marketing Strategy, Analytics & Operations, Funding Circle US
Talithia Williams, PhD, Associate Professor of Mathematics, Harvey Mudd College

THE OPIOID EPIDEMIC AND INSURANCE

The opioid epidemic is raging in America. Per the 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Mortality in the United States, 130 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose and over 10 million people misused opioids in 2018. As a result, there has been a move to seek damages via tort law.

This session will give:

  • A quick overview of the crisis
  • Its impact on tort liability and insurers
  • Anything we can do to mitigate it.

Panelists:
Kevin F. Harris, Associate, BatesCarey LLP
Mark Pew, Senior VP, Product Development & Marketing, Preferred Medical

GREY SWANS AND BLACK ELEPHANTS: WHY WE KEEP GETTING SURPRISED AND WHAT WE CAN LEARN FROM THEM

History is full of examples of crises that have caught society by surprise but which could be described as grey swans or black elephants, things which were unanticipated but in hindsight were hiding in plain sight. Examples include the oil crisis induced inflation of the 1970s, Hurricane Andrew and other large catastrophes in the 1990s, 9/11, the GFC in 2008, and most recently COVID-19. In each case the sudden onset of unforeseen risks led to serious financial turmoil and major changes in risk management. This session will explore a number of these examples, show what we have learned, and offer thoughts on how things may change from the current pandemic. The session will explore the response to 9/11, including how aggressive risk mitigation has significantly reduced the exposure to physical terrorism, although the threat may be evolving to cyber risks to our interconnected world. The session will conclude by identifying some lurking “black elephants” that should be on our radars.

Panelists:
Rade Musulin, Principal, Finity Consulting, Sydney, Australia
Leigh Wolfrom, Policy Analyst, Directorate for Financial and Enterprise Affairs, OECD, Paris, France
Moderator:
Steve Lowe, CAS Past President

Registration is now closed.

No Charge.

ALL registrations must be received by 11:59 p.m. (Eastern) on Wednesday, November 4 in order to participate in these roundtables. If there is space available, we will open up these up to allow on-site registration.

We are continuing with the popular, free, optional roundtable discussions that enable you to add to your Continuing Education credits. This time they will be virtual so you may share your webcam and comment verbally or by chat. The CAS will be offering FIVE roundtables on Wednesday afternoon, November 12. They are limited to 30 participants each. At these discussions, speaker(s) will introduce a topic and present for about 5-10 minutes and then allow the group to discuss, for a total of 60 minutes. All roundtable participants have the opportunity to join the discussion, share their ideas, seek advice from their peers, and explore solutions to challenges.

If you are interested in participating, please review this list of speakers and topics. You may only pick one roundtable and we will honor the first 30 who register in each one, after which we will have a wait list.

  1. CONSTRUCTION DEFECT METHODOLOGIES AND TRENDS
Construction defect claims continue to plague our industry. Discuss with your peers what loss projection methodologies are being used and how assumptions are trending. Learn about data segmentation, CD claim definitions, and common data challenges.

Facilitator:
Ron Kozlowski, RTK Actuarial & Professional Services

  1. BIAS IN MODELS
One of the criticisms of the use of big data and predictive analytics in the insurance industry has been the potential for bias. This potentially takes the form of perpetuating inherent bias in the underlying process being modeled or proxy discrimination. The ultimate result can be disparate or disproportionate impact on protected classes. This round table will discuss the meaning of bias and proxy discrimination, what forms this can potentially take in the insurance modeling process, and what steps are being taken my model developers across industries to identify and address bias in models.

Facilitator:
Roosevelt Mosley, Principal & Consulting Actuary, Pinnacle Actuarial Resources, Inc.

  1. THE HIDDEN IMPACTS OF COVID ON THE INSURANCE INDUSTRY
Continuing the discussions from their concurrent session, this round table will expand upon the insights of all the impacts seen thus far from COVID: Homeowners Insurance, Business Insurance, Cyber, Loss Estimation and More! Leave with ideas on how your organization can take advantage of the opportunities being created. Come join us for this very hot topic!

Facilitators:
Jon-Michael Kowall, Partner and Evangelist, Neos
Andy Kearns, Director, Business Development, American Family Insurance Group

  1. LET'S GET EFFICIENT: MEETINGS AND PRESENTATION DESIGN
We all want the most success from our meetings and presentations. And that hinges on a number of key things: how the meeting is structured and how the presentation is designed. Let's discuss Adult Learning Theory and how it can apply to a meeting structure (both in a corporate setting and for a conference). Also, you don't need to be a graphic designer to enhance your slides / materials. Let's discuss how we can leverage Brain Rules to ensure we have the most impactful discussion / presentation.

Facilitator:
Stephanie Gould Rabin, Founder, Managing Partner, Viridian NYC

  1. REINSURANCE: A LIVE LOOK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RENEWAL SEASON
We are right in the middle of renewal season and the wind has blown, fires have spread, social inflation is still on the rise, ransomware is de rigeur, and COVID is impacting all lines of business. Will rates climb? What about terms and conditions or products? Any new clauses/requirements out there? Any actuarial tips or tricks in measuring the renewal pricing? In this roundtable, we will open the floor to discuss real time observations for the 2021 reinsurance renewal that is underway.

Facilitators:
Mark Westmoreland, SVP, Property Underwriting Manager, Munich Re America
Ben Parmut, Actuary, Munich Re America

The opioid epidemic is raging in America. Per the 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Mortality in the United States, 130 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose and over 10 million people misused opioids in 2018. As a result, there has been a move to seek damages via tort law.

This session will give:

  • A quick overview of the crisis
  • Its impact on tort liability and insurers
  • Anything we can do to mitigate it.
