Event Information

CASUALTY ACTUARIAL SOCIETY’S ENVISIONED FUTURE (FROM THE CAS STRATEGIC PLAN)

The CAS will be recognized globally as the premier organization in advancing the practice and application of casualty actuarial science and educating professionals in general insurance, including property-casualty and similar risk exposure.

CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS

The CAS Continuing Education Policy applies to all ACAS and FCAS members who provide actuarial services. Actuarial services are defined in the CAS Code of Professional Conduct as “professional services provided to a Principal by an individual acting in the capacity of an actuary. Such services include the rendering of advice, recommendations, findings or opinions based upon actuarial considerations.” Members who are or could be subject to the continuing education requirements of a national actuarial organization can meet the requirements of the CAS Continuing Education Policy by satisfying the continuing education requirements established by a national actuarial organization recognized by the Policy.

This activity may qualify for up to 14.4 (4.8 per day) CE credits for the Spring Meeting for CAS members. Participants should claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. CAS members earn 1 CE credit per 50 minutes of educational session time, not to include breaks or lunch. Although this is a virtual event, the continuing education content may still count as “organized” by U.S. Qualification Standards as long as it involves interaction with actuaries or other professionals working for different organizations.

Note: The amount of CE credit that can be earned for participating in this activity must be assessed by the individual attendee. It also may be different for individuals who are subject to the requirements of organizations other than the American Academy of Actuaries. Please consult the particular CE/CPD requirements of the Recognized National Standard you choose.

ANTITRUST NOTICE

The Casualty Actuarial Society is committed to adhering strictly to the letter and spirit of the antitrust laws. Meetings conducted under the auspices of the CAS are designed solely to provide a forum for the expression of various points of view on topics described in the programs or agendas for such meetings. Under no circumstances shall CAS meetings be used as a means for competing companies or firms to reach an understanding — expressed or implied — that restricts competition or in any way impairs the ability of members to exercise independent business judgment regarding matters affecting competition. It is the responsibility of all meeting participants to be aware of antitrust regulations, to prevent any written or verbal discussions that appear to violate these laws, and to adhere in every respect to the CAS antitrust compliance policy. For more complete information regarding please see the CAS antitrust compliance policy.

VIRTUAL MEETING RECORDINGS

Recordings of the meeting are available to attendees for the day that they sign up for. They will be available on the platform for 90 days and then on UCAS for five years. Spring Virtual Meeting attendees will get a discount of $50 for the other days’ recordings they did not register to attend live.

For those that do not register for the meeting, recordings will be $100/day and $250 for the full event.

RECOGNITION OF NEW ACAS, FCAS, CERA

List of New Members

As the CAS Spring Meeting will now be held virtually, there will be no in-person recognition for new members during the virtual event. All new FCAS, ACAS, and CERA that were to be recognized in-person at the Spring Meeting will have their recognition deferred to the 2020 Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. (November 8-11, 2020).

Will I have to wait until November to receive my diploma?

Diplomas for new FCAS, ACAS and CERA will be mailed out when operations resume at the CAS office.

I have a conflict and cannot attend the Annual Meeting. Will I still be recognized?

Yes, you will be recognized in absentia at the Annual Meeting. New members have the option to request to defer your recognition to the 2021 Spring Meeting if you wish to be recognized in person. Please send all recognition deferral requests to Kathleen Dean at kdean@casact.org.

The first part of this session will go over relevant insurance coverages, potential losses and emerging legislative initiatives arising from this historical event. The second part will cover the financial impact of the ongoing pandemic to (re)insurers, the lessons we are learning, and how our industry could help the society to get through this difficult time.

CLIMATE CHANGE AND CATASTROPHIC TRENDS

Many scientists assert that global climate change is occurring but questions remain as to whether there is evidence in P&C insurance loss trends. Estimating the impact of climate change on P&C losses exclusive of inflation and exposure changes remains to be a difficult task.

The first speaker will open with an insightful discussion on some of the most recent global catastrophes and how such events compare to what is often considered the historical norm.

The second speaker will introduce the newly released Actuarial Climate Risk Index which is being developed to help actuaries to answer the question: Are the extreme weather conditions that result from a changing climate producing increased property losses?

The third speaker will go over the IFoA’s Guide to Climate Change for General Insurance Practitioners and suggest what actuaries should start focusing on today.

Panelists
Ron Kozlowski
Daniel Hartung, Meteorologist and Director of Catastrophe Management, Aon
Rich Gibson, Senior Property and Casualty Fellow, American Academy of Actuaries
James Orr, Chief Actuary for General Insurance, Prudential Regulation Authority

INSURING LOW-INCOME PEOPLE AGAINST CATASTROPHES IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

Low-income people are the most vulnerable to the effects of natural catastrophic events. With global climate change upon us, this problem will only be exacerbated. This session will provide some cutting-edge knowledge on efforts that are being implemented right now to help low-income people manage these risks more effectively. Among the topics the speakers will discuss are:

  • Direct and indirect insurance for the benefit of low-income populations
  • The role of subsidies
  • “Forecast-financing” products that pay before the impact occurs
  • Examples from Peru, Mongolia, the Philippines, Republic of Georgia, Ethiopia and others
  • Insurance as a component of risk management

This will be followed by discussion of actual insurance products that have been implemented among low-income markets.

Panelists:

INSURTECH: DISRUPTION IN THE INDUSTRY

Change is coming to insurance. The tradition-bound P&C Industry is on the cusp of the most radical change since the invention of the automobile. Are insurers prepared for the size, scale, and speed of what’s to come from the wave of millennials, new technology and venture capital funding? This session will likely explore:

  • Evolving distribution systems through Insurtech;
  • New Insurtech companies and emerging risks (e.g. drone insurance);
  • Real time pricing and on-demand insurance;
  • Big Data, Predictive modeling, Artificial Intelligence; and
  • Mitigating bureaucracies and regulation.

Panelists:
Rob Galbraith
Lyndsey Toeppen, Vice President, Sandbox Industries
John-Isaac Clark, CEO, Auturo
Pankaj Parashar, Founder and CEO, Purple Ant
