Featured Speaker: Col. Eileen Collins (To Be Confirmed)

History-making NASA astronaut Col. Eileen Collins will share her perspective and insight on the leadership skills needed to break barriers and become a successful leader in the actuarial profession.

One of America’s most admired women, Col. Collins became the first female to pilot a U.S. spacecraft with the Discovery shuttle flight in 1995, and the first female commander on the 1999 Columbia shuttle flight. In 2005, NASA tapped Col. Collins to command the space shuttle Discovery’s historic “Return to Flight” mission, NASA’s first manned flight following the loss of space shuttle Columbia in 2003.

Drawing from her career experiences, Col. Collins will reveal valuable insights learned from both her successes and her failures. From the importance of working with others to achieve lofty goals, to successful leadership in dynamic environments, her perspective will inspire us as we embark on our own journeys.

As a former Board member for USAA, Col. Collins will also share her experience serving on a Board of an insurance company and as a risk management leader.

Introducing the 2024 Strategic Plan

The interactive afternoon session will begin with cross-functional awareness-building, which was a topic volunteer leaders requested through the 2023 Leadership Summit feedback form.

With most functional areas within the CAS meeting on September 16, we’ll ask CAS Vice Presidents to report out on key takeaways resulting from their discussions with volunteer and staff chairs the day prior. Our lightning round format will inform on areas of focus in the coming year, while highlighting areas for cross-functional collaboration.

Next, we’ll unveil the new iteration of the CAS Strategic Plan, with CAS leadership in attendance having the first opportunity to see the Plan.

We’ll conclude with a From:To exercise. We’ll reconvene by functional area into breakout groups for a discussion on how we get from where we are today to achievement of the new CAS Strategic Plan. What changes will you focus on as we work together to integrate the goals of the Strategic Plan into the work of our volunteer groups? (Those not participating in functional area meetings on September 16 will be invited to join their area of most interest.)

The session will end with reports from the breakout groups and an open discussion among attendees of ideas for achieving the Strategic Plan.
