Guide to the Future of CAS Admissions: 2022 and Beyond
The CAS is excited to introduce our Admissions Transformation Plan (ATP) , the first iteration of our high-level blueprint of key milestones to evolve and enhance our credentialing program for the future. We are committed to ensuring that our members have the professional knowledge and expertise to meet market demands, and with the actuarial profession changing at an accelerated pace, we are transforming how we prepare our members for the future.
The CAE resumed in-person conferences with the Fall 2022 meeting on Friday, October 6th at SCOR’s new office in Zurich, Switzerland. 56 people registered for the event in person and 29 more online. You can contact the CAS who will retain a copy of the list of the attendees, if required for your local CPD/CE records.
We are very grateful to the participants for their active participation and to the speakers for their engaging presentations in our first in-person meeting in 3 years.

Data science: A new toolset for the actuarial professional
Data science is increasingly pervading different parts of our lives, from recommender algorithms suggesting what we might like to watch on Netflix to ChatGPT passing MBA exams. As many of us know or have seen firsthand, data science has also impacted our work as actuaries. Some of us might even be concerned that we’ll be replaced by data scientists!
The 2021 Reinsurance Call Paper Prize has been awarded to Neil Bodoff for his paper, “The Roulette Wheel and the Drunken Sailor”. The Reinsurance Call Paper Program happens every two years and is open to anyone to participate. Papers which make a particularly strong contribution to the literature may be awarded a cash prize at the discretion of the reinsurance working group. Mr. Bodoff’s paper was awarded $5,000.
Volunteers are core to the success of the CAS, and there are many ways in which you can be involved. While this article covers what volunteer opportunities are available for candidates, ACAS and FCAS members, future articles will look more closely at some of the specific volunteer opportunities.

The CAS, in partnership with the Candidate Advocate Working Group (CAWG), is excited to announce the launch of a new study resource designed to give candidates a deeper understanding of how to approach and answer exam items—and how those answers are graded. Three (recently retired) items have been chosen from the Exam 5 item bank to showcase in this video series.
The CAS Exam Answering & Grading Insights Videos provide a step-by-step breakdown of these Exam 5 items, which were drawn from the October/November 2024 sitting.
Each video features:
Future administrations of TBE have been deferred based on findings of the TBE Investigation Task Force.
After months of anticipation and preparation, the CAS administered its first Technology-Based Exam (TBE) this May. To both the CAS's and candidates' dismay, it did not go as planned. What happened and what does it mean for the future of TBE? I talked to three candidates who took the exam, Chloe Marshinski, Lee Drinkwater, and Dan Richard, and the current CAS Vice President of Admissions Jeanne Crowell to find out.
Future Fellows Articles for CAS Candidates
Future Fellows is a quarterly newsletter for candidates of the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS).
This article will be released around the time most of you are neck-deep in studying, which means you are probably asking yourself questions such as, “Should I take the time to read Dan’s article, or should I work on my flashcards?” or “Why am I doing this to myself? Is it all worth it?”
First of all, thank you for taking five minutes to read what we have to share here — I’m hoping it helps. Let me start by stating that your study efforts are ABSOLUTELY worth it, my friends.
There are many benefits to receiving your credentials. We will focus on the following:
Over 600 insurance industry professionals recently earned their Associateship (ACAS) or Fellowship (FCAS) credentials from the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) by passing examinations given during the CAS’s Spring 2024 exam sitting.
The 2018 CAS Annual Meeting gives property-casualty insurance actuaries and consultants the opportunity to earn continuing education credits in a variety of sessions covering relevant and timely topics necessary for continued professional growth and maintaining actuarial credentials. Network with your peers and colleagues at a deluxe hotel located in the heart of the vibrant city of Las Vegas.
The Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) is pleased to announce the release of four new reports that reveal ways actuaries can detect and address potential bias in property-casualty insurance pricing.

THE ABOVE & BEYOND ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Have you ever worked with a CAS volunteer who performed far beyond what was expected of him or her? Such dedication is often unnoticed outside a particular committee. But you have a way to let the rest of the CAS know.
The "Above & Beyond Achievement Award" is made annually, to one or more members of the CAS, who have made a recent contribution which is conspicuously above and beyond what is reasonably expected.
The award works as follows:
