Casualty Actuarial Society Hires Mallika Bender, FCAS, as DE&I Staff Actuary

Arlington, Va. – May 18, 2021 – Mallika Bender, FCAS, MAAA, has joined the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) as the organization’s first Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DE&I) staff actuary. This new position will advise on, coordinate, and implement activities related to DE&I for CAS members, staff, and candidates. The DE&I staff actuary will build awareness of and educate stakeholders on DE&I topics, develop strategies and mobilize volunteers and partners to increase the diversity of both the CAS candidate and leadership pipelines, and maintain and strengthen CAS relationships with key DE&I partners.

“I am thrilled to be taking on this role at the CAS,” said Bender. “This is an opportunity for me to blend my passion for diversity, equity and inclusion with my experience of how actuaries think and work, and how employers hire and develop talent. I’m looking forward to working with the amazing team of CAS staff and volunteers to achieve the challenging goals we’ve set for the organization.

Bender brings over a decade of experience supporting diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives to the role, including serving on multiple CAS diversity committees. She currently serves as co-chair of the CAS/SOA Joint Committee for Inclusion, Equity and Diversity, a role she has held since 2019, and is chair of the CAS Diversity Impact Group. Throughout her career Bender has led numerous diversity initiatives, such as facilitating Diversity Training courses and co-chairing the Willis Towers Watson Philadelphia Multicultural Inclusion Network. Bender has also collaborated in DE&I efforts across the industry, including planning sessions for the Dive In Festival for the last three years. She served as chair of the CAS Diversity Committee from 2017-2019.

Bender earned her CAS Fellowship in 2011 and has served in actuarial roles with GEICO, QBE North America and Suncorp Insurance in Sydney, Australia. Her most recent role was serving as a consultant at Willis Towers Watson.

“Mallika is a longtime diversity advocate who has already served as an asset to the many committees and projects she has championed in this area,” said CAS CEO Victor Carter-Bey. “We are thrilled to welcome Mallika on staff at the CAS to continue fulfilling our commitment to diversity, both within the organization and in the profession. As outlined in our new Strategic Plan, DE&I in all areas of our operations continues to be a top priority for us.”

Bender holds a bachelor’s degree in applied statistics from American University. She also volunteers with organizations that support underserved and marginalized communities in the Philadelphia region and incorporates insights from those experiences into her DE&I work.
