Event Information

CASUALTY ACTUARIAL SOCIETY’S ENVISIONED FUTURE (FROM THE CAS STRATEGIC PLAN)

The CAS will be recognized globally as the premier organization in advancing the practice and application of casualty actuarial science and educating professionals in general insurance, including property-casualty and similar risk exposure.

CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS

The CAS Continuing Education Policy applies to all ACAS and FCAS members who provide actuarial services. Actuarial services are defined in the CAS Code of Professional Conduct as “professional services provided to a Principal by an individual acting in the capacity of an actuary. Such services include the rendering of advice, recommendations, findings or opinions based upon actuarial considerations.” Members who are or could be subject to the continuing education requirements of a national actuarial organization can meet the requirements of the CAS Continuing Education Policy by satisfying the continuing education requirements established by a national actuarial organization recognized by the Policy.

This activity may qualify for up to 15.4 CE credits for the Annual Meeting for CAS members (more if you include Tuesday afternoon’s live stream sessions). Participants should claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. CAS members earn 1 CE credit per 50 minutes of educational session time, not to include breaks or lunch.

Note: The amount of CE credit that can be earned for participating in this activity must be assessed by the individual attendee. It also may be different for individuals who are subject to the requirements of organizations other than the American Academy of Actuaries.

SUGGESTED ATTIRE

Business casual attire is suggested for the conference sessions and receptions. It is best to wear layered clothing as meeting rooms tend to fluctuate in temperature.

In Honolulu, the average high temperature during November is 84º F/29º C and the average low is 71º F/22º C.

CONSENT TO USE OF PHOTOGRAPHIC IMAGES

Registration and attendance at or participation in CAS meetings, seminars and other activities constitutes an agreement by the registrant to the CAS’s use and distribution (both now and in the future) of the registrant or attendee’s image or voice in photographs, videotapes, electronic reproduction and audiotapes of such events and activities.

General sessions

MONDAY

ACTUARIAL CHALLENGES AROUND THE WORLD

The contexts in which property/casualty actuaries operate can vary widely from place to place, and from time to time. Cultural, legal, economic and regulatory environments; Catastrophe exposure; Market size, stage of development, and competitive dynamics; Data availability and quality; Development of the actuarial profession -- all these dimensions affect the conduct and delivery of our work in important ways. In this session we will explore these effects; and how they relate to similarities and differences in the roles, activities, and work products of property/casualty actuaries around the world. The panel will feature three panelists from distinct environments to illustrate; to compare and contrast; to discuss some of the unique characteristics and issues in their environment; and to explore the implications for actuaries and for the actuarial profession.

Panelists:
Jefferson Gibb, Vice President, Actuaries Institute (Australia)
Marc Tardif, President, Canadian Institute of Actuaries
Dehong “Derek” Xu, Chairman/CEO, Liberty Insurance China
Ana María Ramírez Lozano, President, Colegio Nacional de Actuarios (CONAC)

TUESDAY

ACTUARIAL JUDGMENT: DRAWING THE LINE

Actuaries do not work in a vacuum, and whether they serve customers within their own company or external clients, the client will invariably have feedback on the actuary’s work product. Recent US tax court cases and class action lawsuits naming actuaries have shed new light on this issue. Panelists will draw on their decades of actuarial experience to consider issues such as to what extent are actuaries required to consider client feedback and/or qualitative or anecdotal information in their assumptions and judgments? To what extend should actuaries consider this information, whether required or not? Between feedback that is clearly innocuous and interactions that are clearly designed to pressure an actuary into biasing their assumptions, there is a gray area. At what point have you crossed the line from making independent judgmental adjustments to being coopted? How can you tell exactly where that line is and what can you do if you fear you have inadvertently crossed it?

Panelists:
Joseph Herbers, Managing Principal, Pinnacle Actuarial Resources
Deborah Rosenberg, Vice Chairperson, Actuarial Board for Counseling & Discipline
Scott Weinstein, Principal, KPMG

INNOVATIONS CONTRIBUTION TO FINANCIAL STRENGTH

“It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change.” - Charles Darwin

Innovation is how we adapt to change and with the increased pace of change in our world, A.M. Best is proposing a new rating criteria on innovation.

The first speaker will comment on innovations that he observed in the industry and innovation trends.

The second speaker will provide a high-level overview of how A.M. Best rates companies and where this innovation criteria would fit in. He will also mention the proposed timeline for this criteria release.

Both will share positive and negative comments received about this proposal. Aon, as provider of rating agency services for clients, and A.M. Best, from their request for comments.

They will conclude by predicting how the industry may look like in a few years, transformed by innovation.

Moderator:
Benoit Carrier, Managing Director, Aon
Panelists:
Greg Heerde, Head of Americas Analytics, Aon
Jim Gillard, Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer, AM Best

WEDNESDAY

HAWAIIAN INSURER PANEL

Hawaii faces a variety of unique challenges from an insurance company's perspective. For example, catastrophic risks such as hurricane and volcanic eruption affect the entire state. This session will discuss some of the challenges faced by a workers’ compensation carrier as well as two insurance companies writing diversified books of personal and commercial lines. Likely topics of discussion include the following:

  • Comparisons to other state regulatory environments, including a discussion of Hawaii’s unique auto insurance laws that prohibit rating variables proven to be effective in other states;
  • Insights on lava exposure in Hawaii, discussing the lack of modeling information to determine pricing, interesting reinsurance issues related to this peril, and oddities in the settlement of claims;
  • Unusual dynamics and partnerships resulting from several property insurers writing hurricane-only policies, while other companies write all perils excluding hurricane;
  • The impact of recent Hawaii hurricane model updates from some of the key catastrophe modelers which drastically increased the tail risk in these models;
  • Current issues impacting workers compensation; and
  • Other unique issues faced by Hawaiian insurers, such as the general challenge of insuring risks in one of the most geographically isolated places on earth.

Moderator:
Guy Avagliano, Principal and Consulting Actuary, Milliman
Panelists:
Jeffrey Grimmer, Vice President & Treasurer, First Insurance Company of Hawaii
Michael Onofrietti, SVP , Actuarial, Product Management & Development, Island Insurance Company
Martin Welch, CEO, Hawaii Employers' Mutual Insurance Company

Take advantage of this opportunity to discuss a real-world challenge and earn CE credits. Space is limited. First-come, first-served.

This is only available to Annual Meeting registrants.

R-1: UNIVERSITY ENGAGEMENT: TRAINING ACTUARIES IN THE REAL WORLD

Facilitator: Erich Brandt

In this roundtable participants will carry on a discussion on the issues raised during this prior concurrent session: A panel of actuaries passionate about education will discuss the various roles they have in training university students to become future actuaries. The panel will describe methods of engaging college students to prepare them for the actuarial profession.

R-2: THE BIG SHORT, PART II

Facilitator: Robert Anderson

In this roundtable participants will carry on a discussion on the issues raised during this prior concurrent session: It's been over a decade since the 2008 financial crisis, yet, the entire developed world hasn't ever really recovered economically. Was there more to the crisis that we still don't fully understand? If so, are we any more prepared now than we were then for the economic risks we face today? This is "The Big Short, Part II."

R-3: ACTUARIAL THINK TANK: INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL INSURANCE

Facilitator: Kristen Dardia

In this roundtable participants will carry on a discussion on the issues raised during this prior concurrent session: In this interactive session, participants will act as actuarial teams to expand into the International Travel Insurance Market for personal lines. Each team will be responsible for developing the pricing strategy for one of five different coverages.

R-4: IMPORTANCE OF A DIVERSE ACTUARIAL WORKFORCE

Facilitators: Paul Kinson, Kuda Chibanda

  • Comparisons to other state regulatory environments, including a discussion of Hawaii’s unique auto insurance laws that prohibit rating variables proven to be effective in other states;
  • Insights on lava exposure in Hawaii, discussing the lack of modeling information to determine pricing, interesting reinsurance issues related to this peril, and oddities in the settlement of claims;
  • Unusual dynamics and partnerships resulting from several property insurers writing hurricane-only policies, while other companies write all perils excluding hurricane;
  • The impact of recent Hawaii hurricane model updates from some of the key catastrophe modelers which drastically increased the tail risk in these models;
