The University of Connecticut actuarial science program, led by director James Trimble, serves 450 actuarial students taught by 6-full-time faculty in actuarial science and 12 adjunct professors.
The Society of Actuaries’ Committee on Knowledge Extension Research and the Casualty Actuarial Society announce the 2020 Individual Grant Competition to support the advancement of knowledge in actuarial science.
The project may be either theoretical or empirical in nature. A key criterion is that the project should have the potential to contribute significantly to the advancement of knowledge in actuarial science.
Academic Community Meeting and Seminar Fee Waiver Program for Academics
The CAS values the contributions of academics to the advancement of actuarial science and encourages academics to participate with practitioners at CAS meetings and seminars. Members of Academic Central may attend up to three CAS national meetings or seminars per year with registration fees waived. (This does not include Regional Affiliate Meetings.)
2017 CAS UNIVERSITY AWARD WINNER - BALL STATE UNIVERSITYThe actuarial science program at Ball State University, led by Professor Gary Dean, consists of four faculty members and 150 actuarial students.
In celebration of the 50th annual Earth Day, the CAS is finalizing touches on a new Climate Change Resource Library that encompasses past meeting and seminar presentations, recordings, articles and research papers covering the impacts of a changing climate on P&C insurance risks. After much deliberation among the ASTIN and AFIR/ERM Section Boards and CAS staff, considering the current state worldwide of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have decided to postpone the Actuarial Colloquia to the Spring of 2022. We will provide more information later as we finalize the dates and location.
The Emerging Issues Prize is awarded to the best call paper to come out of a new, but not necessarily repeating, call paper program. The Emerging Issues Prize is not necessarily an annual prize and can be sponsored by a different committee each time.
The amount of the Emerging Issues Prize is determined annually.

The Casualty Actuarial Society recently published a new piece of research for members and risk management experts whose work could benefit from the use of economic scenario generators (ESGs). A User’s Guide to Economic Scenario Generation in Property/Casualty Insurance provides a basic guide to ESGs and has useful implications for insurance practitioners in the fields of enterprise risk management, capital modeling, asset liability management, finance and valuation.

The Casualty Actuarial Society recently published a new piece of research with potential immediate applications in individual claims forecasting. Part of the new CAS Research Paper series, “Individual Claims Forecasting with Bayesian Mixture Density Networks” is written by Kevin Kuo and introduces an individual claims forecasting framework utilizing Bayesian mixture density networks; the paper outlines a modeling framework that uses a publicly available data simulation tool.
The University Engagement Committee (UEC) has resources available to support Regional Affiliates with their student outreach activities and events. Last month CAS members virtually joined an array of actuarial science experts promoting education, research and interaction within the industry at the 55th Actuarial Research Conference (ARC). The ARC provides an opportunity for academics and practitioners to meet and discuss actuarial problems and their solutions. The 2020 conference was hosted by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, August 10-12.
