Casualty Actuarial Society Highlights from the Annual Actuarial Research Conference

CAS volunteers and staff delivered insights at the 59th Annual Actuarial Research Conference (ARC), covering groundbreaking new research papers and pivotal updates on CAS exams and university programs that are advancing the future of actuarial science innovation and education.

  • Richard Moncher, FCAS, CAS vice president-administration, was the featured speaker at the ARC’s closing banquet and, at a session on the CAS Research Series on Race and Insurance Pricing, discussed a new research paper he co-authored.
  • Dr. Peng Shi, ACAS, Ph.D., a professor in the Risk and Insurance Department at the University of Wisconsin - Madison School of Business, touted the advantages of publishing research with the CAS in the CAS’s peer-reviewed, scholarly journal Variance. Dr. Shi serves as the Variance editor-in-chief.
  • CAS Research Manager Annmarie Geddes Baribeau reviewed all six of the soon-to-be-released Race and Insurance Pricing series papers. During a plenary presentation, she also announced the CAS’s new Quick Start Research Grant Program, which supports timely research by responding to funding proposals in about six weeks, and other unique benefits of researching with the CAS. During the same session, Chandu Patel, FCAS, chair of the Reserves Working Group, described its successful call paper program, which resulted in seven papers regarding reserving and technology to be published in the CAS E-Forum this fall.
  • Tamar Gertner, CAS director of engagement, spoke about the journey to becoming a credential property and casualty actuary through the CAS, which includes university resources for professors and students and the new CAS University Recognition Program.
  • Margaret Lyons, CAS director of certification development, highlighted the opportunities and essential steps for students to excel in the property-casualty actuarial field, and the new Property & Casualty Predictive Analytics (PCPA) exam/project and Data and Insurance Series courses.

In addition, the CAS served as an ARC gold sponsor.

The ARC provides an opportunity for academics and practitioners to meet and discuss actuarial research. The conference was held from Wednesday, July 17 to Saturday, July 20, 2024, at Middle Tennessee State University(MTSU), which is recognized as a CAS Gold-Tier academic program because it meets the highest standards of the CAS’s University Recognition Program. The CAS congratulates MTSU on a successful conference.
