Catastrophe Modeling
This session will review the basic elements of cat modeling, including a review of the meteorological, engineering, and insurance modules that comprise nearly all catastrophe models. The speaker will discuss the differences between the various commercial models and evaluate the key lessons learned from Hurricane Katrina and other recent catastrophe events. He will review the key elements to look for when evaluating the quality and completeness of cat data provided, and he will also consider potential needed adjustments to model inputs and outputs to reflect growth in a portfolio, underinsurance, un-modeled perils, and other items. Finally the speaker will discuss how catastrophe models are used for portfolio management and the allocation of risk capital to individual contracts and/or lines of business.

Advanced Topics Panel and Small Group Project
This session will include a lively discussion of qualitative issues faced by pricing actuaries. Panelists will include an actuary working at a reinsurance broker, a reinsurance underwriting manager, a pricing manager, and a line reinsurance pricing actuary. Topics covered will include dealing with sub-optimal data, how the actuary can increase their influence in the underwriting process, how they can provide value added to clients, evaluating risk versus return, and some of the mistakes that actuaries have made in the past and how to avoid them. The small group project will likely include a discussion of difficult issues faced by pricing actuaries and a case study.

Workers’ Compensation
The US workers’ compensation system mixes scheduled wage replacement and unlimited medical reimbursement. This can lead to tremendously large and long lasting claims payments for an individual claim. Largely because of the very long tail and uncertainty surrounding future medical costs, it is very difficult to price the excess portion of claims. This session will discuss the state of the workers’ compensation market, describe the data available to aid in pricing workers’ compensation reinsurance business and explain appropriate pricing methodologies.

Casualty Pricing Approaches
The panelists will compare and contrast techniques used in the US to those used in the UK and Europe for experience and exposure rating casualty reinsurance. Typically US cedants provide a greater level of detailed loss and exposure data than reinsureds in other jurisdictions. There are also rating bureaus in the US that make available ILFs and other rating data that is generally not publicly available in other countries. This leads to differences in approaches to pricing US casualty reinsurance.

US Property Pricing
The panelist will review property rating of US exposures. In particular, they will focus on exposure rating using ISO's PSOLD product, as well as touching on other methods. In addition, advanced exposure based methods for policies involving layering or participation will be analyzed.
The panelists will also cover the treatment of experience rating and the blending of methods. Comparison with non-US methods will be discussed, as well.

Price Optimization and Demand Modeling
This session described demand modeling and the way that demand models can be combined with actuarial estimates to produce optimal prices. Also discussed was how price optimization in an insurance environment differs from techniques used in other industries which routinely optimize prices, such as hotels and airlines. Regulatory implications were also discussed.
