Understanding reserve variability has become an important skill for the practicing actuary. Moving from point estimates and deterministic ranges to distributions of possible outcomes is one of the critical quantitative building blocks for effective Enterprise Risk Management. Insurance executives, regulators, risk managers and rating agencies are all beginning to raise the bar for the actuarial profession with respect to discussing and disclosing insurance risk calculations.
Data and information are key to the actuary’s day to day work. Internal data from the insurance company or the client itself is only one source of data and information. Other sources are often a major component of state-of-the art actuarial analysis made in the P&C actuarial field.

Working Papers are works in progress reflecting ideas or concepts that are in development and for which the author is inviting discussion. The Working Paper section allows authors to more quickly disseminate new ideas than would be possible with a printed publication. Discussions of Working Papers are encouraged and will be posted along with the papers. With feedback on the paper, authors can modify their work and prepare the paper for submission to a publication. Both CAS members and nonmembers can submit Working Papers and comment on existing Working Papers.
This seminar is designed to provide a general survey of techniques which complement the GLM framework. A substantive case study, as well as a number of smaller case studies, will complement the theoretical discussion with hands-on experience applying the techniques.
PRESENTATIONS SLIDE SEARCH
Many of the presentations from CAS meetings and seminars have been submitted by the speakers and are available for download. These presentations have been cataloged in a searchable database that includes the title, speaker(s), session description, and meeting or seminar at which it was presented.

The CAS has formed research working parties on a variety of topics, under the guidance of a Research Committee, with the specific charge to produce a research product or solve a research goal in a specified timeframe to help the CAS address long-standing research problems. The end result of a Working Party is often a written research paper or possible demonstration software. Below are links to the finished product of past CAS Working Parties.
