Arlington, Va. – October 8, 2020 – The Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) announces the appointment of Sean Kevelighan, president and chief executive officer of the Insurance Information Institute (Triple-I), to its Board of Directors for a one-year term that begins in November 2020.
Every three years there is a change in the leadership of the CAS Admissions Committees. Three years ago, Jeanne Crowell started her tenure as vice president-admissions, I became chairperson of the Candidate Liaison Committee (CLC) and Jason Russ became the chairperson of the Syllabus and Examination Committee (SEC).

The CAS has received feedback from members on a question in the Quinquennial Survey asking how important several factors are in selecting locations for CAS in-person meetings and seminars. The factors listed included "Inclusive and welcoming environment for LGBTQIA+ community and other underrepresented groups" and "high accessibility for persons with disabilities" among the considerations.

For many of us, 2020 has brought on circumstances that take “challenge” to a whole new level! Misinformation and uncertainty have wreaked havoc on the best-laid plans in our personal and professional lives. Graduations, weddings, funerals, exams, promotions – many have been put on hold or eliminated entirely as we wait for some concrete picture of what the future will hold.

When studying for exams, do you ever wonder when and how you’ll use any of the concepts you’re learning? Then look no further! This article is one in a series about “Exams IRL.” A previous version of this article by Rehan Siddique, FCAS, can be found in Future Fellows, December 2020.1 This article will offer an updated perspective on how we as actuaries use Exam 6 material in the real world. We’ll focus on Exam 6-U.S. but also touch upon the Canadian and International versions of Exam 6 as well. Let’s start by going through each exam section of the Exam 6-US Content Outline.2
The property-casualty insurance industry has seen considerable consolidation in the last couple of decades — and it seems that this wave of insurance mergers and acquisitions (M&A) is not about to stop. A number of companies are turning to M&A strategies to thrive under the pressures of the current mature market, low interest rates and catastrophes (among many other challenges).
The DRM committee has awarded a $2,500 prize award to the authors: John Burkett, FCAS, MAAA, PhD; Jennifer Cheslawski, ACAS, MAAA; Gerald Kirschner, FCAS, MAAA; Timothy Pratt, FIAA, MAAA and Diana Rangelova, Fellow, Institut des Actuaires for their paper “Holistic Approach to Setting Risk Limits”.

Laura Hemmer, who is taking over my role, has prepared by serving as vice chairperson for the past year.
In the evolving diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) conversation, the focus is often on one pillar or another and not necessarily the fact that DEI is a Venn diagram. This session will focus on the dynamics of two components of DEI: Black and LGBTQ+ identity as it relates to the actuarial profession. We will cover personal experiences of our practitioners and the areas where diverse perspectives can impact the products and services we provide to the market.
