MICHELBACHER SIGNIFICANT ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
The Michelbacher Significant Achievement Award is intended to recognize a person or persons who have significantly and fundamentally advanced casualty actuarial science. Initially awarded in 1979, the prize formerly commemorated the work of Gustav F. Michebacher and was given to the best paper submitted in response to a CAS call for discussion papers. It was repurposed as the Michelbacher Significant Achievement award in 2010, and was first awarded in 2013.

Virtual Webinar
The Fall 2020 meeting of the Midwestern Actuarial Forum was called to order at 9:00 am on Wednesday, September 30, 2020 via virtual webinar by Ann Chai, President. There were 400 people registered for the webcast.
The meeting started with a welcome from Ann Chai.
The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) is amending the 2020 Property Casualty Annual Statement Instructions to include new requirements for property casualty appointed actuaries. The new requirements are a result of an NAIC independent consultant’s recommendations that procedures be implemented to bolster verification of a property casualty appointed actuary’s continued competency to sign statements of actuarial opinions for NAIC annual statements.
The CAS has well-established election procedures and timelines to ensure the fairness of, and member participation in, the annual election process.
The CAS Nominating Committee will announce the President-Elect and Board candidates for the CAS elections in June. Details about the candidates will be available through the Meet the Candidates section of the CAS website. Voting in the elections will occur in August.
The Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) is pleased to announce that we will continue with plans to hold the CAS Spring Meeting, scheduled for May 11-13, 2020. However, instead of convening in Chicago, we are moving the CAS Spring Meeting to a virtual format.
The 2020 CAS Spring Meeting will provide opportunities for education and networking in an immersive environment designed to make you feel like you are at an in-person meeting -- all with no travel, no additional expenses, and from the convenience of your own desk.
The three-day event will include:
Starting with the Fall 2020 exam administration, the CAS transitioned to computer-based testing (CBT) for Exams MAS-I, MAS-II, and 5 through 9. Online Courses 1 and 2 continue to be administered by The Institutes and scored according to its CBT methodologies.
The CAS asks that candidates arrive at the test center 30 minutes prior to their scheduled appointment time. This will give them adequate time to complete the necessary sign-in procedures. A candidate who arrives more than 15 minutes late for his or her appointment may be refused admission.

Basic Education Waiver Policy for Actuarial Examinations
The CAS’s Basic Education Waiver Policy addresses the extent to which the CAS will grant waivers of its basic education requirements including Exams 1, 2, and 3F; DISCs; Course on Professionalism; and Validation by Educational Experience requirements, or their equivalents as defined by the Executive Council.

“A Fellow, Associate or Affiliate who has ceased to be a member because of failure to pay dues, or by voluntary resignation, may be reinstated by a majority vote of the Board of Directors upon payment of a reapplication fee, to be set by the Board of Directors, and such payment may be partially or fully waived by the Board at its discretion”.

The CAS has significantly expanded its calendar of continuing education programs over the coming months to provide our members with ample opportunities to earn continuing education credits, stay abreast of developments in the property/casualty insurance industry, and remain engaged with the CAS community.

The Course on Professionalism is designed to make the candidate aware of the requirements of the CAS and American Academy of Actuaries (AAA) regarding the conduct of the actuary in the performance of his or her duties.
The CAS offers courses on a first come first serve basis, based on exam priority, in February*, June, August*, and December. A virtual course is offered in June for candidates that may have extenuating circumstances that makes travel to an in-person course difficult. *February and August courses are offered based on demand.
