In an effort to cultivate a more diverse profession and membership for their organizations, The Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) and the Society of Actuaries (SOA), through their Joint Committee for Inclusion, Equity and Diversity (JCIED) have made a commitment to significantly increase their funding and support of the International Association of Black Actuaries (IABA) for the next three years (2019-2021).

Recently, a number of candidates have reported challenges finding exam appointments at a preferred location. As noted in our Fall 2022 CAS Exam Availability Update, the CAS and Pearson VUE continue to monitor capacity for CAS candidates registering for the Fall 2022 exam sitting. We are pleased to announce that additional appointments have been made available.
The National Association of Insurance Commissioner’s (NAIC) Casualty Actuarial and Statistical Task Force (CASTF) is evaluating continued competence of appointed actuaries after receiving a designation and has requested the CAS and SOA develop a new continuing education (CE) log for use by appointed actuaries.
CAS members are invited to The Actuarial Foundation’s inaugural “Shapiro’s Heroes” celebration, October 5, 2023, in Rosemont at the Loews Chicago Hotel. The event supports the Robert Shapiro Memorial Scholarship – a scholarship dedicated exclusively to those pursuing careers as actuaries. Tickets are $250 each.
In referring to a published prior examination, candidates should keep in mind that the questions were based on the course of readings in effect for that particular examination and may not reflect the current course of readings. Candidates may also expect future examinations to vary somewhat as to the proportions of question styles and subjects. New forms of questions may appear from time to time, and the total number of questions may vary from one exam sitting to the next.

This award commemorates the work of Ronald Bornhuetter, FCAS (1957). The award was renamed in November 2006 from the Reserves Prize. The award is made to the author(s) of the best paper submitted in response to a call for papers regarding reserves, whenever the program is conducted by the Reserves Committee of the Casualty Actuarial Society.

Scaling Laws in Premium Models
The CAS conducted its second annual Volunteer Feedback Survey in July 2023. The survey was developed in partnership by volunteers and staff on the Volunteer Resources Working Group (VRWG). The goal was to gather input from volunteers across the organization related to their experiences volunteering with the Casualty Actuarial Society, to determine strengths of the volunteer program and identify opportunities for improvement.

Lasso Credibility is a new actuarial modeling technique using existing tools that will be introduced in the upcoming monograph “Penalized Regression and Lasso Credibility.” Lasso Credibility expands the scope of modeling for actuarial pricing analysis and allows for credible results on datasets that would not provide significant conclusions if using traditional GLM approaches. This webinar will introduce the theory behind the technique, it strengths and weaknesses, provide best practices on its implementation, and introduce expected pricing use cases for this methodology.
