The Casualty Actuarial Society recently published a new piece of research with potential immediate applications in individual claims forecasting. Part of the new CAS Research Paper series, “Individual Claims Forecasting with Bayesian Mixture Density Networks” is written by Kevin Kuo and introduces an individual claims forecasting framework utilizing Bayesian mixture density networks; the paper outlines a modeling framework that uses a publicly available data simulation tool.
The Casualty Actuarial Society recently published a new piece of research for members and risk management experts whose work could benefit from the use of economic scenario generators (ESGs). A User’s Guide to Economic Scenario Generation in Property/Casualty Insurance provides a basic guide to ESGs and has useful implications for insurance practitioners in the fields of enterprise risk management, capital modeling, asset liability management, finance and valuation.

This talk will describe different approaches to measuring and modeling underwriting risk, based on US statutory data. It will show that for some lines there is more uncertainty in premiums than there is in losses. It will analyze the underwriting cycle using a unique time series back to 1923. This identifies three distinct periods, the latest starting with the 1986 hard market. Then, it will analyze the dynamics of loss, premium and loss ratio by major line grouping since 1992.
Yesterday Bloomberg News published an article detailing the efforts being made by CAS and other organizations to diversify the actuarial pipeline, as well as some of the challenges these initiatives face. The article emphasizes the need for early awareness of the profession, as well as diversified sources for recruitment in the hiring process.

The Spring Meeting Working Group (SMWG) issues the Call for Presentations for the 2022 Spring Meeting.
This will be a hybrid event with in-person only sessions and in-person with livestream sessions (for a virtual audience). We are looking for submissions for both types of sessions.
The CAS Student Central Summer Program recently wrapped up its second offering of the program. This free virtual program was originally established last summer to fill the void created by students having their internships cancelled. The initial offering was so well received that student participants and volunteer mentors resoundingly recommended it be held again, and 2021 saw an expanded and enhanced program.

The New Members Award is given annually to one or more members of the CAS who have made significant volunteer contributions within five years of their most recent credential.
Drake University’s College of Business and Public Administration will host the Drake Risk and Opportunity Forum Oct. 29 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. This free, virtual forum will bring together risk management professionals in both financial and non-financial organizations to connect, learn, and celebrate innovation in risk management.
The purposes of the CAS ERM SIS are to promote discussion and the exchange of ideas among members on the subject of enterprise risk management, to provide forums for such discussions to take place, to advance the knowledge of actuarial science as applied to risk management through both original research and surveys of members’ collective knowledge, and to promote good fellowship among its members.
The 2021 Reinsurance Call Paper Prize has been awarded to Neil Bodoff for his paper, “The Roulette Wheel and the Drunken Sailor”. The Reinsurance Call Paper Program happens every two years and is open to anyone to participate. Papers which make a particularly strong contribution to the literature may be awarded a cash prize at the discretion of the reinsurance working group. Mr. Bodoff’s paper was awarded $5,000.

Ratemaking is a major area of expertise for casualty actuaries; therefore, we find developing and fostering timely, relevant, and high-quality research important. The Casualty Actuarial Society will be joining an array of international industry leaders for the Caribbean Actuarial Association's (CAA) 31st Annual Conference, Change: Embracing the Disruption.
The CAS is proud to present our first-ever Annual China Summit, taking place November 11-12, 2021 in Changsha, China. This in-person event will be conducted in Mandarin and will complement the CAS Annual Meeting. CAS Members, non-members, and candidates are invited to attend. This Summit will feature an action-packed schedule covering a broad array of topics presented by leading actuaries.
The University Engagement Committee (UEC) has resources available to support Regional Affiliates with their student outreach activities and events. In the latter half of 2013, personal auto insurance carriers began to notice an uptick in property damage liability and collision frequency. Subsequent loss cost experience has varied in frequency and severity, and by coverage type, region, demographics, weather patterns, quality of road maintenance, congestion level and other factors. In response, industry partners banded together to analyze these trends.
