Short-Term Volunteer Project (March-August)
A new paper has been published on the Variance website: “Recommender Systems for Insurance Marketing” by Giorgio Alfredo Spedicato and Giuseppe Savino.
The paper provides a theoretical description and a practical application of several methods to recommend different insurance coverages to current and prospective policyholders.
Much progress has been made since the evolving Volunteer-Staff Framework (VSF) was introduced, and with the evolution continuing into 2022, I’m excited to provide an update to the membership on the latest developments.
Using the Hayne MLE Model: A Practitioners’ Guide, a new volume in the CAS Monograph Series, is now available for download. This monograph, written by Mark Shapland, illustrates the practical implementation of the Hayne MLE modeling framework as a powerful tool for estimating a distribution of unpaid claims. It is an update and expansion of the earlier E-Forum paper of the same title. The main update is to include correlation between the frequency and severity models.
Actuaries Announce Findings from 15th Annual Emerging Risk Survey
The 2017 CAS Spring Meeting gives property-casualty insurance actuaries and consultants the opportunity to earn continuing education credits in a variety of sessions covering relevant and timely topics necessary for continued professional growth and maintaining actuarial credentials. The purpose of this seminar is to provide information on a variety of reinsurance topics. Practical approaches to problems will be presented and discussion will be encouraged. Participants can expect to gain awareness and insight into difficult issues and are encouraged to share their own ideas.

Variance is in search of volunteers to review submissions. It’s a great opportunity to contribute to new actuarial literature!
A significant part of the work in producing Variance involves reviewing submissions, which is done by volunteers.
There are two volunteer roles: the associate editors (AEs), who select and invite peer reviewers, and (2) the reviewers themselves. Variance needs volunteers for both roles.

The CAS in partnership with The Institutes is pleased to announce that CAS Online Courses will now be offered at a 50% discount to full-time students and candidates without full-time employment. This discount will apply to CAS Online Courses 1 and 2, as well as the new online course on data concepts referenced in the December news post outlining changes to CAS’s 2023 credentialing requirements.
The pandemic has impacted insurance prices, products, processes and its people. Ways of working during the pandemic shifted – but where will it head in the future? During this moderated discussion, industry leaders will discuss how actuarial departments are functioning now and what the expectations are for the future.

ARECA is pleased to announce the 2021/22 scholarship competition for current undergraduate students in the Asia Pacific region who are interested in pursuing the actuarial profession.
About the Scholarship:
The primary element of the scholarship competition is for the applicant to prepare an essay (approximately five pages) addressing a business scenario that is illustrative of the issues that are analyzed by property / casualty actuaries in their daily work.
