October 15, 2020 – The Joint Committee for Inclusion, Equity and Diversity (JCIED) – an effort between the Society of Actuaries (SOA) and the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) – proudly announces a series of professional development sessions that will take place at each of their respective annual meetings.

As we move towards a more diverse actuarial profession, we must learn how to tap into the benefits of diversity. Data shows significant performance benefits for diverse teams with inclusive cultures but being inclusive is a challenge even for homogeneous teams. Emotional Intelligence skills lend themselves perfectly to establishing a culture of inclusion in the workplace. This session will provide audience members with a roadmap for applying EI to unlock the potential of your diverse teams.

The CAS Nominating Committee wants your input on the slate of candidates for the 2021 CAS elections for the Board of Directors and President-Elect. Any member may submit a nomination, and if you are a Fellow of the CAS, you are welcome to nominate yourself. The Nominating Committee will give due consideration to all nominations as it selects which candidates will be included on the 2021 CAS elections ballot.
The Casualty Actuarial Society has co-sponsored a new comprehensive guide to cyber risk exposures for actuaries, insurance companies and anyone involved in pricing cyber risk. "Exposure Measures for Pricing and Analyzing the Risks in Cyber Insurance," by Michael A. Bean, FCAS, CERA, FCIA, FSA, Ph.D., provides insight into parameters for cyber risk exposure and explores why cyber liability poses such a unique problem for pricing risk.
CAS members and candidates are encouraged to update their profiles to indicate whether you would like to continue receiving hard copies of CAS publications through the mail or shift to online-only access. If you do want to continue receiving hard copies, you can update your profile to change the address of where you receive CAS publications (e.g., from your office to your home).

Since the new CAS website was launched on March 9, we have been pleased to receive many positive comments about the streamlined site design and more intuitive navigation. However, we are also aware of a few issues yet to be resolved. More specifically, there are links to CAS website content in Google search results that are broken. We are actively working to resolve this issue, but unfortunately, this is a normal part of launching a new website.
As many CAS members know, March is Women's History Month – a month commemorating and encouraging the study, observance and celebration of the vital role of women in American history. And just like in American history, women have played a vital role in shaping CAS history from its inception in 1914 to the current day. To highlight these contributions, the CAS has been running the WHMxCAS campaign throughout the month of March.
As Women’s History Month 2021 ends, let’s discuss women’s futures. We devote the month of March to honoring the accomplishments of women around the world. Many of them took big risks and suffered many setbacks on the way to achieving greatness. Over the centuries, women have gained the right to vote, taken on a major role in the workforce and become world leaders, but none of those were easy accomplishments — and there is still progress to be made.
