GBMs present a significant opportunity for improved predictive power over GLMs. However, insurance practitioners know they need to balance other priorities, such as transparency and stability – areas that can be weaknesses for GBMs. After a brief introduction to GBMs, we will discuss specific issues related to their use for insurance applications. As was recently announced, the CAS is launching the Actuarial Professional Analysis (APA), a comprehensive evaluation that will allow the CAS to validate or redefine the importance of content areas to current and future actuaries.
All CAS members and candidates will have an opportunity to provide input to the evaluation, but there is currently a unique opportunity to contribute to the project in the form of focus groups. The CAS conducted its third bi-annual Candidate Survey in July 2023. The survey was developed by volunteers and staff from the Candidate Advocate Working Group (CAWG) in partnership with Association Research, Inc. (ARI). The Candidate Survey provides a significant opportunity to obtain candidate input across the full range of CAS activities and gives voice to recommendations from one of our key stakeholders—the candidates.
The Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) announces that the third annual China Insurance Summit taking place in Hangzhou, China on September 6, 2024. This will be a hybrid event, attracting actuaries, academics, and general insurance professionals from all over the world. Registration for this event will open in the coming weeks.
We are now accepting proposals for engaging presentations on matters currently impacting the general insurance market. In-person presentations are preferred, but virtual sessions may also be considered. Sessions may be conducted in Mandarin or English.
Matthew Rodermund Memorial Service Award
The Matthew Rodermund Memorial Service Award is intended to recognize CAS members who have made significant volunteer contributions to the actuarial profession over the course of a career. The award was established in 1990 in honor of Matt Rodermund's years of volunteer service to the Casualty Actuarial Society.
THE ABOVE & BEYOND ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Have you ever worked with a CAS volunteer who performed far beyond what was expected of him or her? Such dedication is often unnoticed outside a particular committee. But you have a way to let the rest of the CAS know.
The "Above & Beyond Achievement Award" is made annually, to one or more members of the CAS, who have made a recent contribution which is conspicuously above and beyond what is reasonably expected.

The two programs are the TRENDY Awards and Communicator Awards. Actuarial Standards of Practice evolve. Two veterans of the Professionalism Education Working Group will present two ASOPs with recently adopted revisions.
ASOP 36 Statements of Actuarial Opinion Regarding Property/Casualty Loss, Loss Adjustment Expense, or Other Reserves will be effective Oct 1, 2024.
ASOP 29 Expense Provisions for Prospective Property/Casualty Risk Transfer and Risk Retention effective July 1, 2024. In addition, we will talk through the process for adopting and revising ASOPs and visit other ASOPs currently being reviewed.

CAS members are invited to attend the 2024 Annual Meeting of the International Association of Black Actuaries (IABA), scheduled for August 1-3, 2024, at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown hotel in Philadelphia, PA.
The meeting is open to all who support IABA’s mission to contribute to an increase in the number of Black actuaries and to provide equitable exposure, access, development and advancement for Black actuaries.
